Today, we learned all about standard practices of any Microbiology lab, including proper attire (lab coats), and the importance of hand washing and disinfecting work surfaces and other lab instruments. We practiced inoculating "bacteria", using water instead, so as to not contaminate the sample with other microbes. This process of inoculation includes lighting a Bunsen burner, sterilizing an inoculating loop, sterilizing the both test tubes, and how to properly twirl the loop to transfer bacteria. I now understand the importance of following directions properly and perfecting my technique.
